Roxy’s Grilled Cheese – Boston

I don’t even know how long I’ve been wanting to have a page on The Yum Diary revolving around food trucks. Seriously, since day one of this “little” project?! Websites, Facebook pages, television. You name it, it was used to research.

I’m usually a planner and for once, gasp, this trip was as spontaneous as it gets for me. Waking up, realizing it was going to be a gorgeous day, it was decided that we were going to make a road trip. I looked up food trucks and when I saw that multiple trucks were going to be at the SOWA Open Market in Boston, I was sold. The day had come…my first food truck.

As we all know, I love The Food Network. Roxy’s was featured – and did awesome – on TFN’s Great Food Truck Race last summer. When I saw them at the end of the row of trucks…it was as if it had a glow.  I knew, right there, that this was it. Roxy’s was the food truck line I would enter first.

Red Arrow Diner – Manchester

You would think that the Red Arrow would’ve been my very first post. It’s located in Manchester and less than five minutes from home. But no, I never do anything the “easy way”. Better late than never?

My cousin Kristen is a fellow foodie and was a champ for joining me in this little adventure. (The last time we went there, she had car problems – to say the least.)

Located in Manchester, Guy visited this local landmark on one of the first episodes of Triple D.

It’s that place that everyone in town knows. You go there to wrap up a late night out, to meet friends for breakfast, and everything in between. Tonight, I was there to try what Guy did – Pork Pie, American Chop Suey and a Dinah Finger!

Name plates all around show where celebrities sat when they visited…I sat where comedienne Sarah Silverman dined.

Galley Diner -South Boston, MA

I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned it before, but I’ll say it again. Going out for breakfast is one of my favorite {food related} things to do – especially on the weekend. There is usually a “starting rotation” of restaurants to choose from. A few weeks ago, while out at a local eatery, I thought that I would be daring and order the hash. I have never, ever, eaten hash but it is one of my brother’s main food groups and so why not? Fail. Two bites later I finished my coffee and toast, left the remaining hash on the plate, and called it a day.

Now I am a fair person and decided to give hash another shot. After doing some research I found THE place to eat it again. The Galley Diner in South Boston was featured on The Travel Channel’s No Reservations last year. When you look up their reviews on Yelp and other websites everyone has the same comment…”They have the best hash.”

Done.

I don’t know how to describe this place. It is small and quaint with great food…but I just don’t think that does it justice. Dad is cooking on the griddle, mom is waitressing, greeting and amusing the diners and (so I’ve seen on TV) the rest of the family helps out on the weekend.

The Friendly Toast – Portsmouth, NH

Having gone to the University of New Hampshire for four years, one would think I had eaten at The Friendly Toast. Wrong. The noted Portsmouth eatery was talked of but never visited. Over the summer I remember watching an episode of Man. vs. Food where they visited JP’s on Main St. in Durham for a ridiculous challenge (Go UNH!!!). Also in the episode they visited The Friendly Toast…what a great reason to drive to Portsmouth…for breakfast!

Loved the atmosphere! Please note the KFC light (top left corner).
